In the census for 1900 he owned and farmed one (bnr. 6) of the Eiebakke farms in Askim. He was widowed and had his unmarried daughter Karoline with him. There was also a Karen Kristensdatter helping at the farm, born in 1831 in Eidsberg. Karen was possibly Karl's sister.

Karl and Maria farmed the Eiebakke søndre farm in Askim from 1863. Karl got the deed to the farm for 1350 spdl. with the division of Maria's father's inheritance in 1868.

In the census for 1865 they lived with Maria's parents and worked on her father's farm, Eiebakke søndre in Askim. They had their 2 year old daughter Caroline with them. ⁶
